Chiron

Gouache/colored pencil on paper/canvas (2020-2021)

In mythology, Chiron, the centaur foster-son of Apollo and Artemis and teacher to the great heroes, is known as the "wounded healer." Though he was abandoned by his Titan father and accidentally poisoned by one of his mentees, his story is one of gentleness, serenity, and a profound connection to the earth. I guess it's no surprise that I found myself enamored with the myth of Chiron during 2020, when so many of us became wounded by disease, injustice, isolation, and uncertainty.

But, like Chiron, we will emerge.

We have all suffered, but therein lies our capacity to heal. To work toward a world that is even better and brighter than the one we knew before this global catastrophe.

These drawings, through the use of movement and vivid colors, capture the essence of emergence. The characters depicted, though divine, represent our deeply human resilience, as well as our ability to emerge from turmoil changed for the better.
